In 1563 Sir Roger Manwood founded a Free Grammar School in Sandwich to make education accessible to the townspeople. Since 1563 a great deal has changed. The original school building still stands, but the School has occupied its present site since 1895.

Though a non-denominational school, Manwood's has had close links through the centuries with St. Clement's Church, whose Rector is a member of the Governing Body. This is one of the several strong community connections which make Manwood's precisely what its founder intended.

There has been boarding provision at Manwood's since the School's earliest days, with major expansion of accommodation in the late 1940s. Girls now occupy the Lodge, once a private house but now part of the School grounds. Boys occupy the Grange, another private dwelling which has been incorporated into the site.

Boarders come from all over the world, as well as from other parts of the United Kingdom. The new flexible boarding arrangements also afford the opportunity for local children to board during the week.

Sandwich is conveniently situated, only a few miles from the ports of Dover and Ramsgate and not far from the A2/M2 which affords easy access to London and beyond. The town's station is only a two-minute walk from the School, and there are hourly trains to Dover and London.

One of the guiding principles of Manwood's is that its pupils should work hard, play hard and contribute to the School community at least as much as they derive from it. The wide range of activities offers numerous opportunities both to develop interests and to take responsibility for organisation of events.
