A co-educational, Specialist Technology and Modern Foreign Languages School, with boarding facilities for boys. The school has international status and is situated in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, and takes pupils aged 10 to 19. "We focus on the individual student so that he/she has a firm foundation for the rapidly changing and unpredictable world of the future."
Established in 1567 this ancient boarding residence (classified as “Outstanding” by Ofsted) forms part of the large, successful and over-subscribed Ashby School which has International School status. This co-educational school has been awarded two Specialisms in Technology and Modern Foreign Languages, with a flourishing and very successful Sixth Form.
Ashby School is very well-equipped and set at the edge of an attractive market town almost in the Heart of England within easy access to the M1 and M42 motorways. The school offers excellent learning facilities, incorporating the latest technology in the classroom environment, with a great many computer suites throughout each department. There is an impressive Library and Resource Centre and the school has invested in new buildings for Science, English, Art & Design and PE and an impressive new Sixth Form Centre.
In addition, School House boarding residence has recently invested nearly £3 million to extend its boarding provision which provides some of the best accommodation in the UK. We are able to offer individual or twin en-suite rooms to our Sixth Form students. The new building also provides boarders with an additional computer suite, lounges, a Sixth Form kitchen and a Games room.
Results for A level are consistently high with over 98% pass rate. A high percentage of passes are at grades A* to B. There are in excess of 35 subjects to choose from at Advanced Level, including applied A Levels such as Engineering, CISCO (CCNA) Industry Qualification and ICT. Ashby School also offers Open University courses to suitable students, whilst continuing with their normal A level programme. GCSE results are also very impressive and well above the national average.
School House, the boarding residence is set in its own grounds in an attractive Georgian House with an impressive and substantial new extension which is exciting and challenging in its profile. The House is comfortably furnished and offers an attractive 'family' atmosphere to boys aged between 10 and 19 years
Boarders are able to take advantage of additional teaching and revision sessions, either on a one-to-one or small group basis after school in a wide variety of subjects, such as English, Maths, Science, Engineering etc at no additional cost. Boarders from other countries are encouraged to enter for IELTS and take early GCSE and A levels in their own languages.
Entry is by interview not examination, with a supporting school report. The most important criteria for selection however are a willingness to live happily and effectively in a society of boys and a wish to contribute hard work and enthusiasm to the School and School House.
Sporting & Recreational facilities are available with a Weights Room, Gymnasium, a large Sports Hall and floodlit, all-weather courts, all within the immediate vicinity of the boarding residence. There is an excellent heated indoor swimming pool lying close by School House and sporting opportunities include water polo. Additional team sports are available to boarders such as uni-hoc, rugby, volleyball, basketball, football etc. Boarders can also play tennis, badminton and a wealth of other sports. The boys are also able to take advantage of professional coaching in football, golf, tai chi and karate etc.
The School and the boarding residence provide a wide variety of recreational clubs. Music and drama are extremely popular choices which provide the opportunity to take part in several concerts and performances throughout the year. The D of E award and orienteering are available to students as is a wide range of residential and cultural exchange programmes. The boarding residence provides a whole host of excursions to boarders throughout the academic year which include opportunities to visit places of historical and cultural interest, theme parks, the theatre, shopping trips, bowling, the cinema and ice skating.
Recent inspections have commented on the family atmosphere of the boarding residence and the close personal relationships and support which are engendered here. Ofsted has, once again, classified School House as “Outstanding” stating “The atmosphere in the house is extremely positive and reflects the care and support provided….Boys present as really caring about each other and their house, which reflects how well they are cared for themselves….. Boarders benefit from an excellent level of individual support provided by all boarding staff. This is a particular strength in School House.”
We have very competitive fees and with a long and successful tradition of boarding. It is very often the case that places for boarding here are heavily over-subscribed.
